A common eland looking out across the safari vista

Common Eland

Tragelaphus oryx

Spot our striking eland

The common eland is one of the most recognisable residents of our Drive-Through Safari. Both males and females grow impressive spiral horns, though they differ slightly, males have shorter, thicker horns, while females sport longer horns with a tighter twist. Keep an eye out and see if you can spot the differences as our elegant eland roam the reserve!

Secret signals

Male eland are famous for the distinctive clicking sound they make with every step. Although a few other species, like reindeer and Père David’s deer, share this curious trait, the exact source of the 'knee clicks' is still unknown. Scientists believe the sound may serve as a social signal, helping males communicate strength and status during dominance displays. Keep an ear out — you might just hear the mystery for yourself!
