Cuban Crocodile

Crocodylus rhombifer

Meet our remarkable crocs

Our Cuban crocodiles, Fang and Kayo, have called Longleat home since 2019. You can find this speedy species on the Walking Safari in the Giant Otter and Crocodile House.

This critically endangered reptile is one of the most agile on land, their powerful legs let them gallop short distances. In the water, they use their muscular tails to launch upward and snatch prey from overhanging branches.

Distinctive features

Cuban crocodiles are easy to recognise by their short, broad heads and the bony ridge that sits just behind their eyes. Their colouring ranges from green to olive-black, patterned with yellow speckles and darker tones along the top of their bodies. In contrast, their bellies are pale, and their tails display bold black blotches or bands.

Did you know?

They can reach running speeds of up to 32kmph on ground!
