Improvement work at Shearwater
3 February 2026
Improvement work has begun at Shearwater to enhance safety for those using the area and the new café.
Timber sleepers will mark bays, and the car parks will be partially lit. Similar work will be taking place shortly at Heaven’s Gate.
David Leverett, Longleat’s Development Director, said: “The work is the latest investment in the Estate to improve the area for users and comes on top of work to the lake itself to protect the historic location and the transformation of the café, Shearwater Cabin which opened in July last year.
“We will be introducing car parking charges with nominal fees once the work is completed to support continued investment in the area.
“Shearwater Cabin is continuing to go from strength to strength with new offerings being explored and it is currently open Friday to Sunday but will be open throughout half term from 11 to 22 February.”
Shearwater Lake was created by the 1st Marquess of Bath in the 1790s, with later additions by the famous landscape gardener Humphry Repton.
The lake is classified under the Reservoir Act 1975 as a Category 1 Reservoir and the repair work was undertaken to meet statutory safety requirements.
