Help name our new arrivals
12 June 2026
It’s 60 years since lions were first introduced to the Park sparking outrage and even questions in Parliament.
Six decades on and we've brought the start of a new pride to the Estate with the introduction of two new African lionesses, from the southern sub-species.
And we're asking guests to help name them from a shortlist of six possibilities drawn up by the carnivore keepers.
Currently there are 18 lions across two prides and with the arrival of the two Southern sisters the eventual plan is to have a new generation of the legendary lions of Longleat.
Darren Beasley, head of animal operations, said: “It is really exciting to have new lions arrive in our anniversary year. When we opened in 1966, we were the first Drive-Through Safari outside of Africa and to see lions prowling through bluebells is such a special sight and now to be creating a new pride is extraordinary.
“Both species are classed as vulnerable so it’s yet another highlight for our commitment to conservation and protecting many different species for the future; plus we know how much people enjoy seeing them in our safari.
“These two girls have come from Denmark and are two-years-old; we are looking forward to settling them in and getting to know them before looking for a male to join them.”
The names chosen by keepers are:
- Kendi – Loved one
- Kabira – Noble, powerful leader
- Reya – Queen / Angel
- Amari – Great strength
- Imani – Faith
- Asha – Life, hope
Caleb Hall, Lead Carnivore keeper, said the names all had meanings in Swahili. “We want to support this new dynasty of lions; these two girls are the mums of our future generations and we wanted to give them names which demonstrated that as well as reflecting their heritage.”
Visitors are invited to vote for their favourite on our social media.
Northern African Lions (Pantera leo leo) come from West and Central Africa while Southern lions (Panthera lio melanochaita) are from East and Southern Africa.
The new girls can be seen at the end of the safari road-trip after Wolf Wood from Sunday as the Park is closed for a private booking on Saturday 13 June.
