Latest news – Longleat House |
|||
The project, which is being undertaken by the Shepton Mallet-based firm Ellis and Co, should be finished around Easter 2008 and will have cost Longleat over £1,000,000 to complete! It is believed to be the biggest scaffolding project on a domestic residence in Britain today and involves 20 miles of metal piping making up the giant scaffolding… stretched end to end this would be more than 3 times taller than Mount Everest! A massive white temporary roof (the size of 5 tennis courts) has been put in place to protect both the builders and the roof during extreme weather conditions. It is envisaged that 60 tonnes of lead will be replaced during the project! The lead is being brought in from Leicestershire where it has been traditionally sand cast. As the work progresses the old lead is being transported back to the foundry where it will be melted down to be re-used later in the project – recycling at its best!
Although the ceiling is still under investigation, the tour route has opened up once more to include the second floor of the House although the State Dining Room which is immediately above the Lower Dining Room is only available to view over a rope. If you visited earlier this year when the altered route was in place, then Longleat would be delighted if you would like to revisit this winter (up to 31 December 2007, excluding Christmas Day). Bring your Passport Ticket with you to show proof of purchase and you will be entitled to a visit to the House free of charge!
