Longleat ...experience the magic

Mini Baby Boom!

May has been a busy month in the Safari Park with the birth of six wolf cubs, one eland and five meerkats!

At birth the baby wolves measure just 15cm and weigh only 500g – and at only 5-days old, they’re probably not much bigger now!
Wolf cubs spend the first few weeks of life underground and so the chance of seeing them at present is pretty minimal but do keep your eyes peeled if you’re visiting in the next few weeks… you never know when they’re going to first show their muzzles above ground!

Meerkat with babiesThe baby meerkats however are already up and about! At 5 weeks old they might be small (fully grown they only reach 700g or so) but they’re certainly active as they scurry about Meerkat Mountain with the rest of their family.

New baby meerkats at LongleatMeerkats originate from Africa. You will always see one standing as sentry (lookout) to warn of approaching dangers - when a predator is spotted, this meerkat gives a warning bark and the other members of the gang will run and hide in one of their many bolt holes until it is safe to come out once again!

Video Podcast

Following the successful launch of the first video podcast back in April 2007, Longleat is working hard on the second.

Featuring a ‘behind the scenes’ look at the latest goings on in the Safari Park – experience the “Big Cat Feed-Up” with Bob Trollope (Deputy Head of the Big Cat Reserves) and Ian Turner (Deputy Head Warden), both stars of BBC’s Animal Park, before meeting the baby meerkats for one of their first filming experiences!

This second video podcast is due for release on the Longleat website later this month. Click here for Video Podcast page.
Not only will you be able to watch it direct from the Longleat website but you can also download it to your desktop, iPod or MP4 player.

What’s Coming Up?…

Siberian tigerTiger Territory
Early summer should see the release of the three Amur (Siberian) tigers into the Safari Park. The three young female tigers, Shouri, Soundari and Svetli have been quarantined at Longleat for the last 6 months having come across from a collection in France late last year. The Amur tiger is the largest of all the big cats and is native to far eastern Asia. It is listed as critically endangered with only 400 or so still living in the wild.
