Lion cubs enjoy autumn sunshine
The famous Lions of Longleat are to officially welcome their newest arrivals when a quartet of nine-week-old cubs makes its first ever public appearance this week.
The cubs were born in August following a three-month pregnancy but had to stay indoors with their mother for the first few weeks of their lives as they adjusted to life at Longleat.
The baby lions, three males and a female, will join the rest of the pride later this week and keepers will be on hand to ensure the cubs settle in safely.
Head of Section Brian Kent said: “We’re pretty confident that all should go well although there’s always an element of risk with the big cats. Mum Luna was born at Longleat back in 2001, and she’s now become one of the pride’s dominant lionesses. We’ll monitor the youngsters carefully over the next couple of months but she’ll always be on hand to stop any day-to-day rough and tumble. She’s an experienced parent and knows exactly what she’s doing.
“Luna is still feeding the cubs and it will be a few weeks yet before they’ll be able to start properly fending for themselves. It’s fortunate that their release has coincided with a spell of Autumn sunshine however as it’s a perfect time for them to start exploring their new home,” he added.
Adult lions can weigh up to 200 kgs and grow to lengths in excess of three metres.
