July 2010 It's not X-Factor but "Ahh-Factor" with these Longleat babies
Keeper Beverley Evans checks up on 2 of the babie
Forget the giraffe and the lions; it’s five African Pygmy Goat kids who are stealing the show at Longleat Safari Park at the moment!
A Billy goat– known as Rocky – was brought into this popular Wiltshire Safari Park for the sole purpose of breeding with the three female residents and it undoubtedly worked as Longleat celebrated five kids being born on the same day!
Senior Safari Warden, Beverley Evans explained “We have three female African Pygmy Goats within the East African Reserve and we were keen to find them a male to breed with. Young Rocky from mid Glamorgan was loaned to us for only six weeks and he obviously worked very hard as we’ve ended up with two lots of twins and a singleton!
“The adult Pygmy Goat measures in at only 41cm to 58cm at the base of the neck so you can just imagine how cute these pint size babies are. I’d estimate they stand at only 18cm in height at the moment… they really are miniature marvels and are definitely high on the “ahh” stakes with our visitors”!
The baby Goats seem to enjoy their new environment
The African Pygmy Goat originates in the Cameroon valley of West Africa. It is a true miniature goat and stands almost as wide as it is tall! They come in a whole range of colour variations from brown to mottled grey.
