March 2007 Lord Bath lends a hand lends a hand to fix Longleat's leaky roof

Mending a leaky roof is the kind of routine DIY job every homeowner dreads.
When the owner in question is Lord Bath however and the roof happens to be sitting atop one of the country’s most important Elizabethan stately homes then the stakes are that much higher.
The Seventh Marquess braved the elements to make his own personal contribution to this major £750,000 restoration project to replace all the lead roofing on his Wiltshire home.
The project, which is being undertaken by the Shepton Mallet-based firm Ellis and Co, will take up to a year to complete and entails the careful removal and replacement by hand of approximately 60 tonnes of lead.
The lead is being brought in from Leicestershire where it has been traditionally sand cast. As the work progresses the old lead is being transported back to the factory where it will be melted down to be re-used later in the project – recycling at its best!
Lord Bath said: “It’s a substantial investment but vital if the integrity

of the house is to be safeguarded for future generations.
“It was last done about 80 years ago and should have lasted far longer but apparently there were problems with the length of lead sheets used and the fact that they expanded and contracted according to the weather.
“There has been some leaking over the years and there are repair patches all over the roof. We never quite had to resort to using buckets but the problem was gradually getting worse and urgent action was required,” he added.
