Lord and Lady Bath officially named and launched two luxurious new Safari Boats on the lake at Longleat on Thursday, April 5th.
Rather than breaking bottles over the bows, the Marquess and Marchioness instead sprayed champagne over them to protect the lake’s main residents - hippo-potamuses Spot and Sonia and a colony of sea lions - from the risk of broken glass.
The new £250,000 vessels will continue the tradition of being named after female members of the Thynne family and be known as the Lady Bath and the Lady Lenka (in honour of Lord and Lady Bath’s daughter).
The naming ceremony took place on the banks of Half Mile Lake and Safari staff have been hard at work practising synchronised manoeuvres to ensure both 100-seater boats are ‘launched’ simultaneously.
Longleat’s Jo Sparrow said: “This year is the 40th anniversary of the Safari Boat rides and it is fantastic to celebrate with the launch of these boats. Not only are they fully accessible but they also offer much greater

capacity and comfort.
As well as providing visitors with a fantastic new experience the boats are also proving to be very popular with our sea lions.
“They sit much higher in the water which allows the sea lions to leap even further during feeding times and create ever more impressive splashes!” she added.
Longleat’s sea lions were first introduced into Half Mile Lake in the late 1960s and are believed to be the one of the few colonies of California sea lions anywhere in the world to live in freshwater.
As well as Lord and Lady Bath a selection of Longleat staff who have been working on the Estate for 40 years or more were invited to join the celebrations.
